Bitcoin’s Tian Ming
All things and systems have their place and time in respect to their users. Our world is divided upon lines drawn from philosophy, politics, religion, cultures and languages, but we are united in our desire to trade. This desire is the ultimate human social contract that gives us a common incentive to learn, partner and compete. It is an endless cycle of harmony and discord that has resulted in the modern wonders beyond comprehension to generations past.
But the question of our current global financial system’s right to rule over commerce must be addressed. As far back as the Zhou dynasty and further reinforced by Mencius is the notion of heaven granting rulers their mandate. And also as far back is the notion of their mandate being conditional to their virtue and performance.
The ancient world’s bad omens of famine, floods and earthquakes have been replaced with financial collapse, corrupt banks, political restriction of commerce and hyperinflation. For the advocates of a monetary revolution, we are most inspired by Satoshi’s prescient proclamation in the genesis block of bitcoin The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks.
Bitcoin is not a currency. It is a representation of a new financial system. There is no need for banks, no middlemen, no tolls nor governments to appease. It is a system giving freedom to the world without respect to geography or language. Never before could one move value instantly anywhere. This system connects and equalizes us.
Yet harmony cannot return to the world’s financial system without an army to invoke it. This army’s soldiers are teachers first and foremost. They must educate the world about the social contract of money itself. Governments and raw materials cannot create value. A money’s worth is forever bonded to its effectiveness as a store of value, a unit of account and a means of exchange alongside the network of those who accept it for products and services.
Like the scholars of the Tang dynasty, our army must teach the masses how to pass Bitcoin’s imperial exams. The subjects have changed from the traditional six arts to cryptography, programming, p2p networks, austrian economics, entrepreneurship and evangelism, yet the purpose remains the same, to find leaders amongst the masses to guide us.
This book is the beginning of your journey into the world of cryptocurrencies. Should you wish to take the exams and become a jinshi of Bitcoin, then be prepared for peril and untraveled roads. Yet know that you are not alone. We will embrace this sojourn with you to a new mandate and its new harmony. I will be your humble guide whenever possible and you shall be mine.
